5:00pm Friday 10th February 2012

Police targeted "vulnerable young women" working as prostitutes in Brent, on Wednesday.

A raid was carried out at three addresses in Wembley, which were suspected of being used as brothels.

Officers interviewed seven young women who admitted to using the premises for prostitution. They were served with notices explaining that if they continued to use the building as a brothel, this would result in prosecution and closure of the premises.

Councillor Ann John, who has taken the lead on addressing the issue on prostitution in Brent, said: "The operation was a success. This is an extremely important initiative tackling the exploitation of vulnerable young women and these raids often lead to solving other crimes.

"It is also important in curbing antisocial behaviour affecting local residents."

Safer Neighborhoods Inspector Brian Reilly, said: "This operation was to target people causing nuisance and harassment to the local community and respond to the fears of the control and management of prostitution.

"It is not acceptable for law abiding residents to suffer the effects of having this type of activity taking place in their community and it is an excellent example of the Safer Neighborhoods Team working closely with residents to ensure that Brent remains a safe and pleasant environment for the whole community."
